fogs in passing rain

passing along the meadows, i put my hands out in hope they would grab mine. all i get is my blurred vision against the wind. so i put my hands around my legs, close my eyes and allow the world to disappear for a second or two. but a second or two won't quite do, so I roll a joint to relax my mind and free me of the constraints of my reality. a life filled with the ailments of knowing a little more than I should. ah, the wind flows through my hands as I lay in the grass and take a peeks at the sky. my mind.

musical exploration - mental liberation

It seems the only protesting in music anymore is against a broken-heart or something insignificant and it's bullshit. It has nothing behind it and doesn't deserve the awesome attention that it gets. Most of music now is created from industry and money and not from the heart and the vibe of people like it should be... pretty much like Kenny G and elevator music in general... purely for money. That's how I see a lot of music: elevator music, but instead of elevators, it's played in hip, modern, retail stores and shopping malls. No one goes to shows if the band isn't forced through your ears on the radio because the passion of sharing and experiencing music is gone. I think it has a lot to do with the lack of intelligence that is perpetuated in this country.

Just like how the media is filtered through a few layers before it makes it to your eyes, or how the presidential candidates are strategically chosen for the people, so is music. MTV, Universal Records, Warner Bros Records, etc... they choose the most applicable candidate to make THEM money and out they go to the radio. Local radio stations try to play local music, but it's usually on a Sunday night at like 11pm when no one is listening to the radio... probably because that's when the radio has the least listeners anyway. College radio stations are the best places to hear awesome new music (cause if you've never heard it, it's new to you), but no one knows about them, and if they do, they don't listen because they don't play the same redundant tunes that everyone else is listening to. What's happened?

If more people saw through the traditional conditioning of the normal society, they'd notice there are quite a few things that are askew, but people just fall into place as they're supposed to. We've come so incredibly far since the nascent years of our nation when it comes to technology, but because of the crooked monetary system, technology is based off of scarcity, and institutions can be controlled by the highest bidder. That's why our government can push hundreds of billions of dollars toward the military a year, but our education system is in the shitter. They don't want people to be educated. The fact the Federal Reserve is still around is proof of that because if people knew how that shit truly worked, they'd change their tune.

What I'm getting at is that we're good on technology for now... it's only going to keep getting better, but the next evolution needs to be that of consciousness and intelligence. Imagine if all that money was instead put into research or aiding parts of the world who REALLY need help... like the people in IDP camps in Darfur and Uganda. If people realized the only threat to homeland security is our own system, they'd be more accepting of tax dollars HELPING people instead of killing people.

But the music scene is a great place to do that; to have conversation with people and bring awareness of these things to people... like I keep saying, most of the people are just unaware that they have other choices then the path labeled "traditional" and all they need is for someone to plant the seed... instead of going out and drinking your brain cells away and going to class hungover the next day, go to a show with bands on the bill that you've never heard of; who are experimenting with music instead of falling into the same groove 1,000 other Myspace bands are in. Go and network with people in person. Open discussions. Bring awareness. Find something useful to put your energy into that can help more people than just yourself.

And that's how change will be brought about, simple conversations and thinking outside the norm. If people put more thought into how to acheive happiness for all instead of solely happiness for themselves, everyone would be happy. I could go off about a million other things, but I'm trying to keep this somewhat close to music... that's why a lot of it is vague on details... hopefully you can fill in some blanks for yourself, or have the honesty to ask for clarification.

--I wrote about this back in July (sorry if parts repeat)(and yeah, I go on a lot of tangents, but they all tie in together): what the fuck has happened to music now?! people accept the radio and mtv like it's the end all be all place to find music; as if music doesn't exist if it wasn't on trl. when i put my headphones on, what do you think i listen to? not that shit, i put on something that a group of people made with passion in their hearts, not dollar signs in their eyes. fuck that bullshit. i just do this by default, it's an unconscious reaction to putting an ipod in my hand, to look for good, true music. it's so easy to bang out a shit record and have it go platinum. if you don't believe me, turn on mtv. if you're lucky enough to catch an actual music video, you'll understand.

this somewhat ties in with my disdain for the mindless television people watch, but only somewhat because that's where they get you. the radio gets you by playing the same infectious shit over and over again so it gets stuck in your head, but tv gets you subliminally. no, i'm not talking about playing a record backwards, i'm talking about your visual memory. it's the reason people say "fuck reading books, i'm going to stimulate my brain with tv!" visual stimulation is much more concrete then audial, or imaginative, so people get pulled in by a music video. the people who rule the tv world know this. it's all contrived. (after seeing a(music video, you have some background visualization to put to the song, so you're more inclined to listen. have you ever REALLY wanted to get a song from a movie because you love the song so much? perhaps you only like the song because you really like the where scene it's played in in the movie that you also really like... maybe? i know it's happened to me a few times.)

i'd call it genius, but is it really a genius plot to play off of the ignorance you created yourself? i don't think so. it's like saying you're "proud" to be an american... to be proud of something means you strived for and acheived a goal of some sort. but you're american by default. you had no say in it, you were just born here and given a number (social security). you can be proud OF america, for whatever reason, but you can't really be proud TO BE something you didn't acheive.

anyway... just to prove my point about the tv addiction (don't take the word addiction too seriously here, i'm using it in the "mental addiction" context, not the "chemical dependence" context), there was a study done (sorry, i can't find a link) where children who watched 'x' hours of tv a day were restricted from watching for three months and urged to read more. as time went by, they did, in fact, begin reading on their own. and after the three months was over and tv was given back to them, they continued to read on their own. yes, they did start watching tv again, but not nearly as much as before. in my interpretation, before the study, the only place reading took place for them was school... which in the eyes of a child equates to NO FUN! so when tv was gone, they found a joy in reading freely that they were not even aware of.

i attempted to do this with my little brothers, but they refused to even give it a second thought. i assumed this would be the case, but it kind of scared me that they couldn't even imagine not watching tv. they said "shawn, you watch tv too!" to which i replied, "yes, this is true, but i don't watch mindless crap. if you can't learn anything from it, it's not worth watching. but i will stop watching tv as well if you guys do." and still, they refused haha.
albeit every human remembers more visual stimuli, children do so more than adults. and that is scary to me... because if all they are watching is mindless drivel, what is it, do you think, that they retaining? exactly. (quick fun fact on that... the brain actually remembers visuals that are flashed quickly before your eyes better than staring at something for a while. for instance, in fight club when tyler edits in the one frame of a dudes cock... or in the ring when randomly they'd flash a ring while changing scenes... your subconscious mind knows you saw it before your conscious mind does, and for some reason, remembers it.)

i was watching my mom watch tv the other night and i really pondered it. i don't know what she was watching, but a bunch of dudes were talking to the host about a girl... i think it was the reunion for one of those bachlorette shows (which i'm not even going to get started on) and then the girl came out and discussed the show with them, the host being the middle man... and i really let the situation sink in for a bit and i realized what was going on...

imagine you were walking through the mall and you were invisible. you go around and you can eaves-drop anyone's conversation, follow people around, whatever you want to do. so you sit down at a table and listen to some people talk about a past relationship and eventually that gets boring, so you jump over to a few older woman talking about their husbands flaws, but how they still love them... another table is having a political debate, etc etc etc... you get it..... that's the majority of televsion. and you can apply it to almost every aspect of tv because that all it is. people talking. why don't you go out and do that with real people? make some of you're own conversation other than talking about the other people you were watching for three months... it just doesn't make sense. people love to watch other people's lives and then talk about it... or even better, they love to watch other people talk about other people's lives or habits or "back in the day" or whatever. are we seriously that bored?

anyway (again), back to my original thought... music. record companies no longer look for talent, they look for something that will make them money. it's very sad because then bands who just want to make it are conned and brainwashed into making crap music that's been done a thousand times already. i pretty much feel like the bands/artists that have been out in the past ten plus years are just changing their names, getting facial reconstructive surgery, and then continuing to make music under another name because it all sounds the same! nothing is new anymore. don't get me wrong, i respect, to some degree, a band's talent and what not, but if i'm being real, if they're so talented, why do they sound like ten other bands that are out around the same time. bands say "if you're a fan of this band, you'll like us" and they list a bunch of bands that have a similar sound, and, oh, low and behold, they too sound just like a drunken orgy birth child of all those bands... why??? why do you want to sound like them... why don't you just make your own music? anyone who knows me knows how worked up i get about this, but this is why... it's so frustrating!

bands shouldn't say "we sound like this genre or band". right away, you're labeling yourself and closing doors to grow as a band. unless they're saying "we sound like the universe... or a planet exploding in another dimension..." or something crazy like that. no one knows what those things sound like, so that's pretty badass to say haha. it's like when people sing in the car to a song... some people try to imitate the singer while others just sing in their natural voice. you need to just sing in your own voice... if you're imitating the singer, that's no longer your voice... that's your imitation of someone else's voice. same goes for music. and hell, it can be applied to life as well. don't imitate others, just accept yourself and be yourself. if you're not a musician, just change the context of this to life instead of music and it can apply to you too! (ohhhh snap! perception tricks!!!! whoaaaAA!!!)

try to think of it from an outside perspective. if you really like a band and they inspire you, great! go on... but if you imitate that band, who are you going to inspire? what you're doing has already been done, so what's so great about your music? you need to strive to be inspirational. take all the bands you like and just make music with no boundaries. no labels. and if you let your musical inspiration run free, you can make something amazing. go watch some children playing and using their imaginations... where do they come up with it? who knows, but they're having a blast making shit up! you can too!

i know the beginning of this sounds a bit harsh, but it's true. a lot of the bands that are out just need to stop making music all together. why do you think bands put out one or two songs and then "disappear" from the spotlight only to release one or two more albums and then break up? if you go through an mtv hits playlist from this year and last year, i guaruntee there will be a few bands you "completely forgot about". and if you can't figure out why after reading this, you weren't paying attention.--

We must become the change we wish to see... music included.

NO-MUSIC

where has the creativity in music gone?

into the hands of corporations that feed us what's good and what is bad.

the whole music scene is a fucking fashion show glittered with a farce that tells us something is pushing the limits of music or is so called experimental. it's funny and a great joke. thanks.

this stupid attitude in music these days is funny. oh, look at me. look how much I don't care, it's a formula for getting signed t some label or "indie" label. a fucking joke. no original thought.

what is going on with music?

take a look.

Meditations cont..

I don't know how many meditations there will be but this will be the last one for a little while. The 4th meditation means a lot and puts heavy emphasis on where society is headed, but interpret it anyway you please. Just share the music. I am not quite sure if anyone even downloads these songs I keep posting but hopefully one day someone will stumble across some of this music and find it somewhat interesting, until then the music will continue to be posted.

Meditations Cont..

recently I came to a few conclusions during my meditation:

living among pure energy, circulated through air molecules and atoms we are all pure connected energy. strings of sound, a blanket of processes that brings us to the concept that dying is an illusion. energy is neither created or destroyed. we are all infinite and eternal. the attempt to reach a level of consciousness that gives the mind the ability to see such things, in theory, lies in finding the true Self which would naturally allow one to come to the conclusion that we are all one. What if in the essence of that lays string theory and further investigation proves that we are all soundwaves? Then the true method of communication would be sound, particularly song.

for these thoughts I created two Meditations.

Meditations

I figured I would post what it feels like to me sonically when I meditate. I may make some songs like this in the future depending on if my meditation on any particular day is tiny bit revealing about the ego role I tend to play in life.

DOWNLOAD. Meditation.

sidenote: just finished the bonus track/the conclusion to lifting the spirit of fin. as a group right now we are all trying out a bunch of different types of music and exploring the possibilities of the future when we have many instruments at our disposal. so all of these explorations in sound are prototypes of songs or skeletons that have not had flesh tossed on them quite yet. for those who read this blog or give two shits, we lost a guitar player in the band and switched our name to Mountains....since then a number of EPs have popped up out of nowhere and most of them tend to be on the ambient or experimental side (I hate narrowing shit down to terms but fuck it). There is a reason behind this in my eyes, it's the ability to stretch our arms out and not be tied down to strictly one style of music. I encourage everyone to go out there and record anything you can, with anything and anyone you can then give it away for free so that people can share and begin a large musical community. This is all babble but there is a point to all of it. the point: I will keep creating tracks everyday until I die as a way to write down the story of how I experience life through sound...hopefully along the line this will catch on to people and they will join me in this massive recording. Hopefully It will get to the point where everyone in this community will be able to share thoughts without speaking.

IMPROVISATION PART 3!!!

Hey all!

I am very exited to put forth a new EP called Improvisation Part 3. Two weeks ago I put out a EP on our blog called "While eating breakfast stoned..." in that EP there was three sections of improvisation but the one that stuck out was the last one (Improvisation Section 3) to me, so I continued to play with it and eventually came up with Improvisation Section 3 Part 2. This particular song had a really simplistic piano part that essentially served as a skeleton for our live version of the song. Tony and Shawn both loved the track and at our show in West Chester we jammed on it and great things happened but to make it even better Tony decided to take the song and make his own version, so basically I decided to take all three versions and create an EP called 3 Types.

I know that we have been tossing a lot of music in everyone faces but soon I shall compile what we have thus far and give a big download update, also look out for the audio from out west chester show and cds at shows!

night course

tonight I came to the technology center at my school due to the fact that i had a paper due the next day, while working I kept humming a tune in my head and coming up with string arrangements in my skull as well. so I decided to see what I could do with the thought and the song "night course" is what came of all that. I am going to add vocals and all that jazz later but for now I am just posting the unfinished product, as with all the other songs I post up here..but please feel free to download them as much as you can. I will posting updates on this song as time rolls by, also "improvisation part 3 section 2" was created into an actual song that we played at the show in west chester. I can't wait to record the whole thing with the band and let you all here it, it's def a way different take on the one that we have up on myspace.

warm springs of daylight feeling

on friday we played a show at some skate park in west chester. There weren't a lot of people but we played well and messed around with some ideas live that turned into good things. I recorded a lot of it and amanda took some photos so we should have all that up. I also recorded the audio of our trip there and what not. I may add some shit to it then post it. I like to record journeys and conversation, it gives some sort of insight to how humans interact.

besides that i made a track a little while ago that was a somewhat cont, of the improvisation 3.

oh and I've been making a wish list of sorts for things that I want in the near future,

Ramble!

I remember when I about 15 or 16 a friend of mine invited me over to his place to listen to a record called by someone called Sun-Ra, the album I can recall... I believe is.... called when sun comes out. it was the first thing that showed me where music could be taken and the experiments one could do with sound in the most extreme sense. Directly after a few plays of that album, he put on the Radiohead song  Airbag and it made me want to vomit, that is how much emotionally and mentally the sound vibrated all over my body. That day I went home and looked up everything about the band and all of their influences...then tried to listen to all of it. That week onto the following years, hip-hop got a backseat to anything experimental in terms of jazz, rock, classical and whatever.  So for that I thank Radiohead and Sun-Ra. Thus the reason I feel in my soul that experimenting with music is highly important, pushing the limits is important, trying something different is important because it gives you new insight into your life. If I chose that day to not listen to anything that day because I loved hip-hop so much then I may have missed a world of music. I'm ranting but my point is never to get comfortable with one way of listening, playing, or experience sound. I think that is what Radiohead as done to a certain extent and for that I thank them. so thats what i will try to do....Wether people are hearing it or not, it does not matter as long as I am contributing to the ongoing progression of music in some way.

my grammar is horrible.

RADIOHEAD

on NPR they are streaming two amazing things.

1. Radiohead's show at the Santa Barbara Bowl
2. Johnny Greenwood's Popcorn

please check it out because it brought me to tears, this band just does it for me time after time not matter what. They create entire little worlds inside each song, their entire body of music is nothing short of amazing in every aspect from the songwriting to the amazing sound scapes they create. Radiohead is simply just a great band.

The Abstract

alright since I was a kid hip-hop was the foundation that I built upon with music. It started when I heard a Nas song called "N.Y State of Mind." Ever since then I loved hip-hop and respected it for long time, it brought me to the likes of early common (like water for chocolate), Jay-z(reasonable doubt and blueprint), mos def(black on both sides), the roots (the tipping point) and last but not least fucking tribe called quest. To me they were everything that hip-hop was about but took it further by experimenting with jazz and blending it to make some crazy beats. It was about the tribe for me cause I def was not a wu-tang kid by no means. hahahah, anyways...Q-tip from Tribe Called Quest is coming out with a new album called the The Renaissance and I heard some tracks today that were amazing...so take a listen.

Ambient in Progress EP, new song

Ambient in Progress EP is something that I've been working on, for quite some time now I've been really in love with ambient music and more particularly the works of Brian Eno and Aphex Twin. So with that love I've come up with some of my own works that deal with my thoughts at any particular moment. Early I mentioned thoughts of a film about Mountains and what not and I figured that some of these tracks may part of the soundtrack. Who knows when a film is going to come out but it's a work in progress.

would you go?

so I've been tinkering with ideas in my head for the past couple of months for some sort of long improvised session with other musicians in Philadelphia. I've come up with the idea of "The Meeting" but that fell through and frankly not a lot of people showed interest in it at all. It's quite odd to me that people do not want to come together and play music, maybe it's Philadelphia or maybe I don't have enough musical cred to try to pull something like this off...who knows. Anyway....I've come up with a new idea that may work. I am going to set up a improvised session at a local venue instead of a house or etc...that way bands will want to do it I think...again who knows. The sessions will start off with one band or person playing some sort of sound and from there all other players will join in and add their layers of sound until a sound collage is produced. The audience will be advised to sit down on the ground or lay down. I am going to email some people to try to get this thing moving and we shall see what happens but if you do not hear me speak of this again then just assume that I tried but no one really gave a fuck.

SKELETON OF NEW

so today I sat down and did a tiny skeleton jam on the keys for this new song i've been messing around with called "i had a thought so I wrote it down in sound." it's real simple and straightforward as of now but we shall see what the boys do with it once I toss it there way. it's repetitive but it's just the skeleton of the song, sorries girls and boys.

beacch houuuuuuse

my bloody valentine is fucking amazing. I've been listening to the band since about 11th grade when some kid in my math class told me it was my duty and handed me a copy of isnt anything..this is a set I heard about where they just did a noise jam.

i love this band a lot right now, it really sets a peaceful mood in my head when I listen to them so hear is a three part thing of them playing in a basement on the really super cool musical critical gods that are Pitchfork.

*remember kids if you get a really really really super amazingly god like review on pitchfork aka 9.7 or 8.0 you can be the new it "indie" band for an amazing 6 months to a year.

all bullshit aside, i really like this band.

on another note,

yesterday my ears found me listening to the sounds of neil young again. man I can really respect a person who creates such honest music in so many different angles...his music makes me feel like fucking hiking while being surrounded by 20 ft trees. i dunno.

a thought:
a couple of posts back I wrote about a a white tent in a room with music coming from it, well I've been thinking a lot but in a slightly different way. the white tent idea is great but i think it's been done before, not that it matter but ya know. so i was thinking of film and a projector screen, i'll admit I've tossed this idea to the guys like 1 million times but this time I have a tiny twist to it. I want to film interviews that we have with people, asking them questions about life. questions about things like collective memory, dreams and so on. interviews with friends, bands, moms, dads, little kids, loved ones, dogs. then we can display those interviews on the projection screen while we play and also make free interview dvds for people. my mind is going to explode!

in the morning i have these things called sound thoughts, it's a really stupid and lame name but it's what i can think of as these thoughts. so what i usually do is play some sort of instrument or mess with sound in some way, well now I am compiling some songs and forming an ep called Early Morning Thoughts. it will def, have some sweet jams to come with the likes of shawn and tonyeeeeeee coming soon as well, maybe even a afternoon nap time.

copymicroMIX

so i am very interested with deerhunter/atlas sound and to be more specific bradford cox, I mean this is a guy who is giving away free music all the time on the deerhunter/atlas sound/loutus plaza blog. he just makes songs then puts them on the blog for free download, fucking great! anywho, I've decided to go of with what he is doing by posting some of our own micromixes for download as well as all the songs we come up with individually.

grass songs

our first show was played and it turned out to be a great learning experience for all of us. there were some bumps in the road but there were plenty of gems that we are planning to exploit. as soon as September rolls through we should be back in full swing with shows, eps, and short visual pieces...oh and maybe some day-glo.
sidenote:
the two pieces of music we have up on myspace are just brief experiments in sound. soundtrack to a film?

visual

tomorrow( june 22) the weather underground will be following us around and lending us cameras for the hell of it. who knows what will happen, probably really boring stuff like bike riding. but filming is fun so why not?

so a.d.d is officially out of the process of creation for reasons we don't quite understand. In the end it was his choice and for whatever reason we respect that.

with that said, we are going to change the name of the band to something more suited for three off the edge young men. we are tinkering with some ideas and will probably have a new name by the end of the day tomorrow or the next day, ah who knows...but the plan is to change the name.

why?

simply because it's a completely different band from what it once was, there is a whole new sound emerging.

Imagination

a white tent in the middle of a living room in a random house. with people surrounding it in silence. suddenly the lights turn off and all that can be seen is a bright light coming from inside the tent. then they all notice shadows of humans moving around. sound is then heard, a wave of sound coming at them from all directions from the tent. the end.

idea?

hot sauce 2

So we've rounded week two since we last heard from a.d.d. and we've all managed to stay optimistic about the future of our musical journey. perhaps it's tolerence, or just that we've all planned ahead long ago for this exact situation, but regardless, it's going to be a strange journey from now on. to experiment and evolve musically with the same dudes for six years creates incredible things, like the ability to vibe with each other and transition flawlessly into the next part of an unplanned, impromtu jam... and i think that's what i'll miss the most, should a.d.d. not return. it's more than just that, though. we've lost a friend for no reason. but i'm not here to sulk and sob because there is a lot i won't miss too. i won't get into that...

we've been discussing ideas and increasing our drive and confidence in this new excursion a lot recently. this weekend we will put those ideas into action because we'll finally have a space to practice. i'm pretty stoked and i know the stoner and the beastie boy are as well. (p.s. i love these nicknames because they can pretty much apply to anyone in the band haha)

i've also been on the look out for other up-and-coming/established bands who've gone through trouble and continued on regarless as well as others who have odd line ups. it's been part of what's given me more and more excitement about this. i can't wait. we will make you dance, groove, trip, guess, sway, vibe, laugh, and cry. (why not?) i dunno, at least that's what i imagine when i think of our current ideas.

so there wasn't really a point to this post other than i was awake and had nothing better to do. i'm too dazed from the little sleep i got to read, the only thing on this early is the news and they just keep repeating the same crap over and over... isn't it funny how meterologists are some of the only people who are paid to be wrong? just a little fun fact so this post wasn't completely worthless :) haha alright, i'm done, now i'm just jaw-flappin' as they say down south (?)

oh well, it's called vida ambit ramblings... i'm gonna go get the led out and listen to ramble on... YEAH!

HOT SAUCE.

Well....

We started a new blog because we have new thoughts and ways of thinking, plus we need to log our adventures without taking up so much blog space on our myspace. Thus, Vida Ambit Ramblings.

As of now we are starting a visual creating by a fellow that goes by The Weather Underground Organization, he will film us in our journeys throughout the next couple of years and maybe throw some previews on myspace; if you haven't realized it that video on our myspace is a joke, try and catch the joke but look closely.

When it comes to band members we are unsure. right now we haven't heard from a.d.d for about a week so we (the beard. beastie boy. stoner) are going to move forward until we do hear from him. This means we are creating a whole new batch of songs, and we don't know what they are going to sound like quite yet because its going to be different working with less instruments but we are bound to come up with something. We are actually very excited to start new adventures, play more shows, and come up with new ways to make people watch us.
